Commercial print’s breadbasket to receive new Government support:
In very welcome news for the UK print industry, its key breadbasket sectors will be given additional support from the Government to assist with their recovery:
- The Government will simplify and reduce the costs of the licensing process for outdoor seating and stalls, making it easier for people to safely drink and dine outside to comply with social distancing
- Proposed planning freedoms will mean that outdoor markets, pop-up car-boot sales or summer fairs will not need a planning application
- Pubs and restaurants will be able to use car parks and terraces as dining and drinking areas, using their existing seating licenses
- Temporary changes to licensing laws will allow many more licensed premises, such as pubs and restaurants, to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises
- The Government has outlined new measures that will allow UK tourism and visitor attractions to reopen to the public

New advice, guidance and tools If you’re business is putting 100 or more employees on furlough:
For claim periods starting on or after July 1st, you can download a template if you are claiming for 100 or more employees and upload this when you claim.
There has also been additional advice and support put in place for businesses processing claims for the Job Retention Scheme.
New advice for employers who have transferred staff under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006 (TUPE) following acquisitions or mergers:
You can now make a claim for SSP paid due to coronavirus to employees who have been transferred to you under TUPE if you had:
- A PAYE scheme that was created and started on or before 28 February 2020
- Fewer than 250 employees (including TUPE transferred employees) across all PAYE payroll schemes on 28 February 2020
- If you did not have a PAYE scheme that was created on or before 28 February 2020, but the previous employer did, you can make a claim if they had fewer than 250 employees across all their PAYE schemes on that date.
- As the new employer, you can only make claims for SSP that you have paid, a claim cannot include SSP paid by the previous employer.
Praise for our civil servants that have risen to the occasion of the pandemic:
The Rt Hon Thérèse Coffey MP writes: Last week, there was a significant moment in our fight against this terrible virus, as the alert level was lowered by our chief medical officers.
As they have said, this does not mean the pandemic is over – far from it. But it is a welcome sign and shows that the collective sacrifice you, the British people, have made and are continuing to make is turning the tide on this assailant.
As such, this milestone lends itself to reflection – and I want to take the opportunity to pay tribute to the fine work of my department in supporting those in need through these arduous times, something that has been overlooked by many who have criticised the governments, and in particular civil servants, response to Coronavirus.
