Alex joined Spectrum 8 years ago (where does the time go) purely a chance conversation at a party. Alex was unhappy with the course choice he had made and wanted to change to a business course. We were looking for an apprentice. We approached his college, and they sorted it out.
Alex impressed his tutors so much they approached us about doing talks from an employer and apprentice angle. We did a couple of taster evening talks with approx. 40 – 50 parents and young adults present. They were so successful word got round that Alex had been an inspiration and we were asked to speak to a larger college, I couldn’t make it, but Alex was happy to do it on his own, he wasn’t expecting over 150 people to be there!! He did it with flying colours.
Alex joined our estimating team; his input now far exceeds this role. Improving the processes, picking my brains on how I arrived at costings and developed spreadsheets and cost calculators for estimating, ensuring my knowledge was recorded for everyone to use. We are now in a position where I am going to him to discuss thoughts on quoting! This has given me the gift of time to be able to work “on” the business.
We installed a CRM system which Alex became the expert on, in fact any IT issues can usually be solved by Alex. He is willing and happy to lend a hand to help anyone at any time.
Alex looks after new members of the team and work experience students, taking them under his wing. He has a calm approach to whatever he faces, I have never seen him stressed, he just takes everything in his stride. He is a great sounding board with a levelling thought process, diplomatic but able to get you to look at situations from a different angle and diffuse escalating situations.
Alex has far exceeded my expectation and I thank my lucky stars every day that he joined Spectrum, all businesses need an Alex. His contribution, dedication and hard work to the business has altered my work/life balance for the better.

The VeloTaper is a fully automated flatbed taping system that applies double-sided tape accurately onto a variety of media and or substrates automatically in the designated spots. The result is a finished cut and creased product immediately ready for assembling.
A number of scenarios require double-sided tape to be laid onto sheet or roll materials to allow for later assembly or fixing. Traditionally this would be a manual and time-consuming task, and one that is subject to the inconsistencies typical of manual positioning.
The VeloTaper automated flatbed taping system makes light work of this task and taping can be performed at the same time as other processes such as cutting and creasing, for ready-to-assemble displays for example.

Its championing of artists and creatives is critical to ensuring that print can thrive and has a strong future by showcasing what is possible and how it can be creatively used to connect on a human level. A good example recently highlighted was its long-term support of Danish photographer Helga C. Theilgaard, who has worked throughout her career to highlight the truth of homelessness and humanise a group of people who are very often misunderstood and marginalised.
One of Tradeprint’s strategic objectives is to “Invest in people and community”. For their 25th Anniversary they chose to celebrate by making 25 pledges to pay it forward. They introduced paid volunteer time off to all employees who support charities within their communities across the UK.
Already this year they’ve made donations of notebooks to a local school, easter eggs to a women’s refuge and contributions to a male suicide prevention group and youth mental health charity.
They offer young people employment opportunities including work experience and apprenticeships. They work in partnership with employability services for disadvantaged and disabled people.
Bringing people together in our industry has been a real struggle over the past 2 years but the creation and running of the Crown Pub has offered our members and the wider industry a home to keep in touch on a regular basis. The virtual has also become the physical ensuring a sharing of ideas (and drinks) is still part of the new normal!
